From the artist: “Caitlin ffrench is an artist working in East Vancouver (unceded Coast Salish Territories), and received her BFA from the University of British Columbia (Okanagan) and she attended the Kootenay School of the Arts for their textile program. Ffrench works with paints, inks, and charcoals that she makes from botanical and earth pigments, often wildcrafting them from within her landbase. Caitlin's study also includes constructed realities (staged photography), green works, destination art (public art), environmental installations and time pieces. She is attempting to close the distance between life and art, helping us to understand our inherent place in the fabric of life on Earth, while informing us of the path to a healthy survival of all life forms.”

DANIELLE HASLIP
From the artist: “A Salty Stitch is the beautiful project that rose through some tough dirt to get here. In late 2017, I was searching for tools to help manage my declining mental health. I needed a release for my anxiety and I was hoping that creating something with my hands would give me a sense of purpose and self. I took the name as an embracing of the fact that my wit and sass are some of my defining qualities, despite growing up being told otherwise. I presented my first batch of hoops at the Kettle Society's art show Art Against Stigma two years ago and have since opened an Etsy shop where I offer options to have custom pieces made and have had commissions from all over Canada as far as Atlanta, Georgia. My style has evolved over time and I enjoy pushing myself with new stitching techniques, adding textures but most of all using this delicate art form as a way of speaking on issues I care deeply about. I use humour or beautiful images to accompany sharp words like “BELIEVE WOMEN” “NOT YOUR HONEY” “THE FUTURE IS ACCESSIBLE” and stitch images of fat bodies and gender neutral humans showing affection for themselves and others. I stitch things that I would love to populate the walls of my home, my hope is that other do and it brings them joy every day.”

STEPH HUNTER
From the artist: “Hey, I’m Steph! I’m a Vancouver native. I first began shooting film and developing prints in my high school dark room. In 2017, I graduated from the Professional Photography Program at Langara College. Through that program I was lucky enough to do practicums with both Latreille Architectural Photography, and Tusayaaksat Magazine in the Northwest Territories. I’ve taken part in local group exhibitions, such as “Art Waste Festival” and “Does Anyone Shoot Film Anymore?” in Victoria.
I love to explore the world and connect with different cultures and communities. I pull inspiration from everywhere, and I think that reflects in my work: in this series I shoot a complete roll of film, rewind it and then shoot over top of the images... while the product is completely random and abstract, it typically produces beautiful juxtapositions of the world around us.”

HALEY PERRY
From the artist: “Haley is a visual artist, illustrator, and musician from Vancouver. Last year they graduated with a BFA in illustration from Emily Carr University and plan to continue on to get their masters degree. Haley has shown in a variety of group shows, participated as a vendor at Canzine in 2018, self published a comic last year, and has mostly been doing commissions and personal work since graduating.”

From the artist: "My name is Shoko Sonoda. I was born and raised in Japan. I have been tattooing since 1997. I moved to Vancouver and have been tattooing here since 2000--currently tattooing at Sacred Heart Tattoo. Most of my designs are inspired by Japanese traditional art."

BETH STEWART
From the artist: “I am an abstract expressionist artist living in Vancouver with my three sons. I have a PhD from the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at UBC and have been painting since 2012. My art is both emotional and political, inspired by the complex ethical and emotional landscapes of inequality. Through the aesthetics of art, I practice seeing beyond narratives of suffering and victimhood to the beautiful possibilities of humanity.”
About the paintings: “In these pieces, I reflect on the agency of a young woman (‘Idro’) I have come to know through my academic research in northern Uganda since she was a child. ‘Idro’ was born of forced marriage into the rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army. She is writing her life story to advocate for children born of war around the world. Some pieces are collaborations with Idro, inspired by her writings and poetry. She has entrusted me with her story, and I work with it to share it and reflect on her personal strength as she navigates a life as a young woman who was born of war.”
